Planning holidays is not a strength of mine, and I am massively into outsourcing this whenever I can. After various organizational cramps and a failed plan for going to the US I had to figure out on my own what to do in 2025.
There was this long standing wish to travel to Asia. I have never been there before (no yoga on Bali or backpack student trip to Thailand, the question is allowed whether I have even studied properly; more into work than into travel ever since). Anyway it wasn‘t particular Asia I wanted to go, there where clearly two destinations in my mind for a very long time: Singpore and China.
Singapore as a childhood dream and China due to massive fascination for its incredibly rich history, culture and of course, as economist through and through, for its miraculous economic rise since the Deng Xiaoping era.
So the agenda was set but there were operative issues I had to figure out. Doing a hunting license in Q2 of 2025 I should have used my evenings to study. Instead, one late evening in April, I decided I want to book my holiday now. So I stopped studying wildlife science and started research instead. Obviously with limited success as otherwise it would have arisen clearly to me that a combined trip to Singapore and China from a geographical POV doesn’t really make sense. As a half asleep, notoriously overlearned hunting student I didn’t realised that and flights and hotels were booked quickly.
This blog is now the second late night project of 2025 as I also wanted to give my five minutes to my travels and share a bit of my experience. I am currently very much into preparation and try to dive as deep into the history and culture of the countries as possible. Besides that I also had the brilliant idea of learning Mandarin (too many interests, too much motivation) and now I am feeling once a week like a stupid 5 year old child trying to figure out pronunciation properly. Additionally a child with constant guilty conscience as I definitely should study more. As you should choose your battlefields wisely I might dive deeper into Mandarin after my trip, but its like a fascinating new universe anyways.
Still unsure about what to really do there apart from low hanging fruits (Chinese wall etc.) I do not feel assigned to share organizational stuff here. It should be more like a personal diary of my impressions and how I see the destinations I am going to through my lens. As a proper travel blogger I probably should share where I am going to:
- Singapore: 21.08-24.08
- Beijing: 24.08-30.08
- Shanghai: 30.08-05.09
As partially resistant to advice choosing China as first time Asia traveler might have been a bold choice (yes I know Japan or South Korea might have been the better). I am so curious about the country and its culture and history that I hope I can compensate my lack of experience through that. Singapore should hopefully help me to mitigate the culture shock. Additionally I am solo travelling but being convinced that you have to be a bit naive in the foundational questions of life, combined of course with realism and pragmatism, I am very much looking forward to my adventure east.
Do you have recommendations for me for one of my destinations? In general?
